Which are the top most developed countries in Africa?
Before dealing with the topic, here is the definition of a developed nation.
What is a Developed Nation?
A developed country is an autonomous nation with an improved economy, aided by advancement in technology and decent infrastructural development.
Africa has experienced several declines in development. Most of its nations have not fully recovered from the ruins of gaining Independence.
Africa is the world’s poorest continent but does it mean they are no match to other big names?
The continent is regarded as a developing part of the world. However, North Africa is an exception as they have a well-built infrastructure and advanced technology systems.
This is slightly followed by the South African continent who has the likes of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Angola, and so on.
East and West Africa lag in terms of development but most of its nations are springing up and stepping up their game.
Nigeria (Acclaimed giant of Africa), Ghana, Kenya, and the ivory coast are the frontiers of development here.
How is development determined?
Development is determined using the Human Development Index, shortly referred to as HDI.
This is the method adopted by the United Nations Development Program to calculate development.
This spans across all states, including both the developed and developing nations.
HDI is calculated by putting these five factors into consideration. They are the healthcare system, mean school year, life expectancy rate, economic growth, and standard of living.
Classifications of HDi
They are four (4) main categories (or rating) of HDI. These are classified with a scale ranging from 0 to 1. They are:
- 0.5 – 0.55 (low human development)
- 0.55 – 0.70 (medium human development)
- 0.70 – 0.80 (high human development)
- 0.8 – 1.0 (very high human development)
HDI is calculated every year. Out of 54 countries in Africa, Seychelles is the only nation that has a very high human development of 0.801.
It is ranked 62 in the world. Eight African counties have acquired a medium human development scale.
